Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Masters, LMT, LE.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Becky. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became a licensed massage therapist in Washington State in 1996 after having a mini massage and facial at a day spa. I had my first trip to Europe planned shortly after my mini spa day and after this trip I knew two things: I couldn’t live my life with only 2 weeks of vacation a year, and I wanted to be a massage therapist. When I returned, I enrolled at Seattle Massage School. Twenty-one years later, I am still passionate about two things: work and traveling.
In my twenty-plus year career, I have worked for myself and as an employee in the spa industry. I fell in love with skin care and the lovely products while working in spas. That inspired me to take good care of my skin. I have stayed out of the sun, worn sun screen, and used eye creams since I was in my late 20’s. Now that I’m in my 40’s, I can see the visible results of these practices. They have helped me age wonderfully, but I know I am aging, and now I am dedicated to holding off the aging process. After moving home to Chicago, being near an excellent school allowed me to get a solid education in aesthetics. I knew it would be a great addition to my massage career. I didn’t want to give up everything I have learned the past 20 years. I love working one on one with clients, working in a relaxing environment, and helping clients slow their skin’s aging process is a great thrill!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think there is a smooth road in skin care, or owning your own business. Skin care is ever evolving! I continue to take classes, go to seminars and keep learning to keep up with the beauty industry. Keeping your skills current is key.
When you own your own business, you need to keep up with the business side, too. Marketing and social media always need attention. There is always something to update, triple check and learn. It has been a lot of fun learning the business end, teaching myself how to build websites and market my skin care business. I love being an entrepreneur, but working at my computer for hours is my struggle. I am grateful to have friends helping me. Roseann Magda is my editor & Sarah Pietruszka works on my website’s SEO.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lincoln Square Skin Care story. Tell us more about the business.
Lincoln Square Skin Care specializes in facials and chemical peels. I want to educate people on how great regular facials and chemical peels can be, and re-educate them on what chemical peels do. They all saw a Sex in the City episode and think they are going to have to hide under a black veil. This isn’t the case! Peels are wonderful and have come a long way over the years! I specialize in Image Skincare Peels. I also offer a service for freezing off age spots, sun spots and small skin tags. I am very excited to offer this service!
At Lincoln Square Skin Care we offer a one-hour relaxing spa facial and 30-45 minute chemical peels. My favorite is a massage and peel combo — the perfect 90 minutes! This autumn, we will start offering in-home peel parties. It’s a great way to celebrate for brides, bachelorettes, birthdays, pre-prom, holidays, or just have fun! We have treatments available for all skin types, even treatments for teens and pregnant ladies.
I am most proud of hiring my first contractor. Donna Switzer, LE will start working with me in July. This big step for me, and I am very excited to have her join my company. Donna specializes in working with clients with sensitive skin, acne, and is certified in using Lira Clinical products. She is currently studying for her CIDESCO Diploma, a 1200-hour advanced certification.
What sets us apart is we love to educate our clients and help them prepare their skin to attain their skin care goals! This is a process for people who want to improve or make changes to their skin, but are using over the counter products they buy at a drug store at home. We offer spa quality skin care at neighborhood prices.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel lucky that I found my path in life at age 24. I have been helping people with their pain & posture for the last 20+ years, and now I get to help people with their skin and confidence. I get to make people feel good and look better!
I feel especially lucky that after moving to Chicago I found Lincoln Square Massage and started working for Laura Lane, LMT. Lincoln Square Massage just one Best Massage in Chicago 2017, the bar is set for the skin care side! Laura has been an inspiration to my inner business woman. We decided it would be great to diversify the massage clinic by offering skin care services and that is how Lincoln Square Skin Care was born.
