Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatrice Davis.
Beatrice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I left Germany many years ago, I never imagined working with such artists as Elton John, Boy George, B.B. King, Ray Charles and, Common just to name a few.
Considering how I started out as a front desk agent at the Hotel 21 in Chicago, and by chance, I met the rapper Tone Loc while working late one evening he asked me if I could assist him with dinner reservations, limo service and entre into specific night clubs he was interested in visiting. He was so pleased with my execution on such a short notice, that he referred me to several other artists. To my surprise and delight, Jive Records. I was invited to interview, landing a job as an office manager and a promotion a year later, to studio manager and events coordinator. In less than two years, I received an offer from an American/European tour promoter where I became the first female tour manager. Of course, I was flattered and accepted, especially since I was able to open the door for other women in the industry. I worked my way up from a little rap group to working with the biggest talents in the industry.
After close to 15 years on the road and numerous tours around the globe, with all my experience within the music industry, I decided to launch my own entertainment consulting company. To date, I have represented boxers, fragrance, and fashion designers, a blind rock and ice climber, actors, film producers, authors, non-profits and smaller corporations and even managed the world heaviest sumo wrestler and Guinness book record holder Emanuel Yarbrough. About 2 years ago, I established an online magazine and this year, I launched my first NSAEN online film festival. The beginning of this year, I was featured in a book called “Immigrants Coming to America” by Jo Condrill. I am always ready for new challenges and adventures. I constantly strive to set new standards and new visions to expand my company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a female pioneer in the entertainment industry, especially way back when I started out you are for sure not as credited as your male associates, nor do you get paid the same amount.
Your talent and qualifications are under constant scrutiny and you had to proof; you are qualified to do the job.
Let me give you an example; as tour manager, I was in charge of collecting money and making decisions about the shows, the crew, and talent and had to work closely with the local promoters. One local promoter in Switzerland refused to work with me, because he has never worked with a female tour manager before and would not collaborate or take directions from me. I had to push the envelope by threatening him that I will cancel the show, if he will not cooperate and work alongside with me. It came to the point, where I had to call my boss in NYC to explain him the situation and after a long conversation with my boss, he finally accepted that he had to accept that I was the decision maker.
This is just one example of what I had encountered as tour manager. There many other situations, but over the years I learned how deal and handle various circumstances to credit and proof that I am as capable to handle the business just like a man.
As a small company, competition is out there and it is in the form of larger agencies that have an easier tap into the media world and access to the top people in the industry, which are harder for my company to access.
No event goes without headaches and you have to learn how to manage and to find solutions in the spirit of the moment

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There is for sure one moment, I look back and smile to the achievement of Common, the actor and rapper.
I worked with Common on a show when he started out here in Chicago and it was under unfortunate circumstances that led to a poorly executed show. Too many of his friends took advantage of his fame and tried to share his limelight. After the show, we met and talked to evaluate what were the problems and issues which caused the inadequate show performance.
I offered him my advice how to take control of his career and gave him advice what he needs to consider for the future to stay on top and perhaps even became an academy award winner.
Now, looking at his achievements, I can say for sure he listened and considered my advice. He even wrote me after our first initial meeting a hand written letter of appreciation, which I still have as of today.
