Today we’d like to introduce you to Beata Flatley.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born in Poland, I’m a makeup artist turned beauty guru who first brought my European beauty secrets to Hollywood’s A-list in 1990. Fast forward 16 years and several hundred celebrity clients later I brought my red carpet expertise to the Chicago area when I established Red Carpet Lashes in LaGrange IL in 2006. Skillful, passionate, and dedicated to my craft, I became one of Chicago’s most sought after beauty experts today.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest challenge is how to convince more American women they already have everything they need to be beautiful, regardless of their age, weight, skin type or any other outward appearance. European women have a certain je ne sais quoi, an elegance and simplicity, a self-possessed confidence. Here in the U.S. we look to models and celebrities for our standards of beauty. They are usually tall, thin, and elegant. Although it exists in other countries as well, a common thread in American thinking is that if you weren’t born with beauty, it can be created by trying to look like a celebrity. I discovered that it’s best to simply bring out the beauty in who you are and not try to be someone you’re not. People will see right through it, it’s not genuine, every woman has an inner beauty that in some cases just needs to be set free and that’s when they look their best.

What were you like growing up?
As far back as I can remember I’ve always loved makeup! For me, it was a way to express myself and do something fun. I got my highly inquisitive nature from my dad, a research scientist, so as a kid I was always inclined to investigate, eager for knowledge and unduly curious. I became relentless in finding out as much I could about the amazing field of beauty & cosmetology, I still am.
