Meet Barry Albeker of Barry’s Computer Consulting and Repair in Glenview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Albeker.

Barry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As an avid fan of technology and serving people, I spent 11+ years learning computers as a hobby. I then joined the Army and spent 9 years as a signal support systems specialist, serving 2 tours overseas. After I returned home, I started to work in IT for large corporations.

In 2014, I decided to open my own business, operating part-time, to service broken devices in my community, and soon registered with the Veterans Affairs Department as a Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB). I was still working full time at a large corporation when I started the business. A little over a year later, I was laid off from my full-time job as the organization was going through a reorganization. It was very scary for both myself and my family. Luckily, I had started the business, and was able to focus on that full time. I have been fortunate enough that it has become quite successful, and has grown in the 2+ years since it became my full-time position.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were a lot of challenges along the way. I worked for a healthcare company doing IT work where I learned a great deal. Shortly after I started there, I started my business, which was more of a hobby and side business at the time. When I got laid off, my daughter was only 6 months old. It was a very scary situation not knowing what will happen next or how I was going to provide for my family. I had no choice but to switch over the business to full-time. Although, it was a scary moment, things did seem to fall into place, which I am very grateful for. I was able to work from the comfort of my own home and also take care of my daughter who is now 2 and a half years old. My daughter and my wife are my rocks throughout this journey.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Barry’s Computer Consulting & Repair, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has played a huge role. In my life and my business.
