Meet Anthony McClain of McClainStrong in Downtown Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony McClain.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It began as a passion for fitness that grew to include empowerment in its many forms. Personally, fitness was the one thing I knew I could turn to regardless of how the rest of my day or life was going. It was the one thing I could control and constantly improve upon. I grew more and more fascinated with it and decided to share that fascination with others. Through sharing and reflection, I realized that the most important/worthwhile/satiating part of this work was the transformation of others. Not just physically, but holistically guiding people on a path to genuinely make themselves and those around them happier, healthier, more confident, and more productive. Empowering people to live their best lives. To make more changes and fewer excuses. To get out of their own way. To truly flourish instead of merely exist. There’s a big difference between working hard and doing your best. I want to speak to that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being raised by a single mother at the age of sixteen provides a number of obvious obstacles/struggles but it also instilled in me a mindset of gratitude that has helped me see my obstacles as opportunities. Everyone has a struggle. Everyone. How are you going to use that struggle to make you better?

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about McClainStrong – what should we know?
My business is in its infancy. I’m currently a Senior Instructor at SoulCycle in Chicago but I recently created and host a podcast called Bout That Time which focuses on highlighting the stories of luminaries, leaders, and people striving to make a difference for the better in an effort to encourage listeners to do the same. I do my best to motivate. To live by example. To prosper. To inspire. To flourish. To edify. To galvanize. To elicit the change I wish to see in the world. For the time being, I’m too focused to be proud. I’m certainly excited for what’s to come, but this is merely the inception. What sets me apart from other is that I am not concerned about the others. I wake up in the morning with the purpose of pursuing my purpose. That purpose has nothing to do with comparison.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother. For doing the impossible and then some. For growing up too fast, for being too strong, instilling in me too much confidence, and filling me with too much love. I am forever grateful.

Robbie Robinson. For being an honest and dependable friend as well as an amazing mentor. I appreciate your trash talking and your insight.

Mellody Hobson. You are truly singular. For always showing me what hard work looks like. For pushing me to be better even when you don’t know it. For helping me realize who I have the potential to be.
