Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Coakley.
Annie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Before joining Downtown Evanston, I worked in the Department of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago. My concentration was working on economic development programs and initiatives, mainly Special Service Area taxing districts. I saw the job posting for the director of Downtown Evanston and thought this was my chance to apply what I had learned about district management in a great downtown and community that is Evanston.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been very lucky as the organization was performing well before I arrived so I have been able to take that and just move on with new ideas and programs.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Downtown Evanston story. Tell us more about the business.
Downtown Evanston is a 501 C 6 non-profit corporation established in 1987 that works with commercial and residential property owners, businesses, nonprofits, and the City of Evanston to enhance and promote the downtown Evanston business district. Downtown Evanston is comprised of a mix of over 300 restaurants, retail stores, entertainment venues, hotels, health and wellness providers and other services. Combined with access to public transportation, proximity to the lakefront, and an array of special events, Downtown Evanston is a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
That is a tough question and my answer is cheesy, if I’m up and about and able to work I think every day is a lucky day.
