Meet Angie Berthelsen of I Heart Yoga in Fox River Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Berthelsen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.

I was busy running my own Marketing business and wasn’t very happy. At the same time, a neck injury left me in serious pain on a daily basis. I could barely make it through the day and doctors just kept prescribing pills that didn’t work. I didn’t want to be on pills bedridden any longer so I decided to go back to practicing yoga. I had practiced for a few years but had recently taken a break from it for about a year to explore other exercises. Almost immediately I felt a difference and my pain levels dropped. I fell in love with yoga even more than I had the first time. I also realized that I had put off Yoga Teacher Training years ago because I didn’t have time. I decided it was time to do it and thought maybe I can teach yoga on the side.

While in training, I talked to a friend whose husband was looking for a yoga teacher at his training facility. He didn’t mind that I wasn’t certified yet and was willing to give me the opportunity of teaching his clients. I was in heaven after teaching my first class and after a couple months, it was clear that I had found my true passion. I decided to slowly shut down my marketing business and focus on creating I Heart Yoga.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far! I think it seems so smooth because I struggled so much with my marketing business but in a positive way. I made tons of mistakes while owning/running my marketing business and learned from them, so I was determined not to make the same mistakes with I Heart Yoga. There are always struggles, but when you do something you love, it’s worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I Heart Yoga offers personalized yoga classes to people of all ages. I currently teach at different locations like gyms, schools etc… I offer lunch break yoga for small to large businesses, after-school yoga for elementary-high schools and am always looking to expand. I am certified to teach Prenatal and Children’s Yoga so if I had to pick a specialty, I would say Kids yoga. I love teaching to kids! I love getting creative and thinking up ways to keep them active and interested. We do a lot of games and songs!

I am most proud of the attention to detail that I give to each and every one of my classes. I connect with my students and I pay attention to their abilities and push them, just enough. When I am writing out my classes, I am personalizing them for the students. If I am preparing to teach a class where I don’t know whose coming or know anything about their abilities, I spend the class watching and studying my students to help them get the most out of the class. I am proud of my ability to connect with others and proud that my business is helping make people healthier in mind, body, and spirit.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very emotional, sensitive and curious girl. I have always felt deeply connected to people and especially animals. When I love, I love deep and I am the same today.

I was active in sports and as I got older began to love music and learned to play the guitar. I was always hard worker and had big dreams to be a writer and TV Producer.
