Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Davanport.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In the grand scheme of the universe, I’m a ball of energy. I’m a grown woman. Queer and biracial. My mother is Irish and European; my father is Black and Native. I was born in Cabrini Green at Mother Cabrini hospital and moved out of the projects to Gage Park three months later, where I lived until my early 20’s. My dad was in jail until I was five and my mom worked numerous jobs. She essentially raised me. I have two sisters and a brother. I’m the oldest.
I was a “theater kid” but never thought I’d be a rapper. Life brought me here through a crazy journey, and frankly, I’ve had some false starts. Even though I had some great opportunities very early in my career (like getting a placement on a Tech N9Ne album) I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted it to go. I’ve had a lot of pressure put on me, and I’ve put even more on myself to drop a new project. I’ve got an upcoming tour and new music on the way, so you’ll soon see the wait was worth it!
Some artists work their whole lives be noticed and I’m one of them. I’ve been noticed and that’s a blessing. I didn’t always look at it as a blessing but that was me taking things for granted. I’m on the brink of my second tour this year and I’m in awe. I’m grateful. I’m excited and busy. I know smart work and motivation trumps stagnant energy, so I just keep writing and recording and living my dream. Stay tuned, love.
Please tell us about what you do.
I’m a singer and a rapper. Neither takes precedence over the other. I have a home studio where I’ve been teaching myself how to produce. A lot of my new music reflects the life changes I’ve gone through in the last few years. My message to others, whether they be fellow musicians or supporters, is simple. One day at a time. Take things as they come. Build your world according to you. Take your time. I hope that people can learn a number of things from me. Learn to love, learn to feel their pain, learn to utilize their spirit to help them overcome challenges. I hope they can learn to be compassionate and confident from me. We spend a lot of time worrying about others instead of worried about our own circumstance. I want to teach people to be a little more selfish when it comes to their happiness and strength. Focusing on building self can really make a difference in your life.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success… well. That’s loaded. I guess for me success is waking up with stuff to do. Being able to accomplish the day’s goals and then set new goals toward whatever my end game is. Success for me is being debt free with a healed spirit. I know we all want materialistic possessions like homes, money, all that jazz but I want to be happy. I want to live a fulfilling life. Go off the grid and live near a swamp and practice magic with all my babies and partners. Success is different for everyone. For me, it’s happiness.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can find my music on Tidal, on Spotify, on my personal Soundcloud, https://soundcloud.com/angeldavanport. I’m dropping a handful of songs in October.
