Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Rivera Maza.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in El Salvador where I attended a French School. There, I learned how to speak four languages (Spanish, English, French, and some Portuguese).
In 2011, I moved to Chicago and decided to stay in Chicago because I was able to double major. I graduated with a BA in Dance and BA in Business from Columbia College Chicago. In 2016, I traveled to Europe by myself and a few years before that my grandmother sent me a Yoga book and so I decided, when I came back to Chicago to study Yoga. I did a work study program while I was working a full-time job and four part-time teaching jobs. After finishing the training, I travel to Asia. I’m currently a Yoga instructor, a dance teacher, a professional dancer with Ground Rhythm Dance Project, work in the Tax Industry, and I’m a student of Movement.
I offer private Yoga and Dance lessons, and when free I study movement and science.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. For a period of time, I was working five jobs. Luckily I was and I am very organized but that was hard.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My mission is to help full-time employees move their bodies by teaching them online or in person basic to advanced moves so that they can feel like kids again, live a longer and healthier lifestyle, and feel fantastic on the outside as well as in the inside.
I speak different languages so that allows me to connect on a deeper level. I’m all about the “why” and I care about the student-meaning rather than imposing a specific format, I watch, listen, and then I execute.
I have a podcast. The name of my Podcast is “Did you move today?” that’s where I interview movement professionals and keep doing research about what movement is.
What were you like growing up?
I was bullied when I was in high school and found movement as a coping mechanism. I tried every physical discipline. Plus, my parents were athletes so movement was always a part of my life. I was very genuine, perfectionist, shy, a part of a loving family, and type A. I’m grateful for everything that happened to me because it made the person that I am today.
