Meet Ana Munteanu of Ana Munteanu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Munteanu.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in my hometown Chisinau, in the Republic of Moldova. As a kid, I played piano, sang in a choir and watched my mother sing and act on the stage of the music theater. Later I studied at the conservatory, hoping one day to become a jazz singer. I practiced alone, I listened to jazz musicians, trying to imitate their phrases, their tone. My impatience and desire to achieve everything quickly brought disappointment and self-doubt. Never satisfied with the way I sounded and terrified of the stage I decided to quit for a while and moved to the United States. I was 23. The process of assimilation in this new world took hard work.

Paying rent on time was my only goal for years until things calmed down and I started making ends meet thanks to my babysitting job. But as my belly was becoming full, my soul was getting empty. I started doing vocal exercises, just to learn how my instrument works. I called my practice “saving the soul”. I didn’t have any expectations until I started noticing improvement and confidence building in my instrument use. I taught myself to play guitar and with a little repertoire of songs from my country and from other European countries I got a street license and went playing out. My voice sounded different, more free and full. And when you busk, nothing is going to make people stop and listen, only the frightening feeling that you’re being honest. The street gave me the confidence. I was rewarded for the patience I had with myself. People gave me money, invited me to play at their events and venues, guided me and recommended me to other people. I realized later that I could make it a profession. I continued to work on my voice and expanding my repertoire. Music gave me precious friends and collaborators that helped me and supported me. Today I’m part of four projects as a guest and also singing solo.

Please tell us about Ana Munteanu.
I’m a singer, I sing world music and jazz. As an artist, my job is being in the moment and giving. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing people being profoundly moved by your work.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
