Meet Amy Roach of Amy’s Atelier in Beverly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Roach.

Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always loved art. As a child, I was very creative. I went to college after high school and began studying art history. But life got in the way and I had to stop my schooling. I went back to school in my 50’s and got my degree in art history. I continued my formal painting studies throughout the lean years. I took an oil painting class at the local art center, Beverly Art Center, to help fund my muse. I decided to paint one of my cats. And I guess you could say, the rest is history. I found my niche. Pet portraits! My love of animals and art became a natural fit. I was asked to take teach at the Beverly Art Center. And I teach private lessons at my studio.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, choosing to be an artist as a career is not an easy, nor financial road. I had to put my studies aside when I ran out of funds for college. I was not able to continue my schooling till my 50’s.

Finding my muse sometimes was a struggle too. I found joining the local arts alliance and surrounding myself with other artists has helped during the lean idea times. Teaching art is also helpful in keeping ideas fresh.

Please tell us about Amy’s Atelier.
I am a pet portrait artist. I specialize in all things animal. I work primarily in oils but can do any medium. Most of my portraits are memorials of pets that have gone to the rainbow bridge. I love bringing joy to a family who recently have suffered a loss of a pet. When not doing Memorial portraits, I concentrate on animals but in a more abstract method.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
No, I think my path lead me the way I needed to go. Without the struggles I would not have found the art I love to do. Painting animals help me through some lean creative times. When I painted that first portrait of my cat something just clicked. It was like that was what I was born to do.
