Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Wood.
Alice, please tell us about Wealth Watchers Foundation. What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others in this field is that I applied a for-profit mentality to something that probably belongs in the not-for-profit world. I was hoping to become to money what Weight Watchers has become to weight.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Financial Literacy is underfunded and undervalued but it’s so important. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter how smart someone might be. If they can’t handle money they will be lost.
But it’s hard for schools to find time in the day to teach such an important skill. And budgets have become so tight in the workplace that bringing financial wellness programs to employees hasn’t been as high a priority as it should be. And let’s face it…it’s more fun to spend money than to save money. We really need to create a cultural shift that values and embraces the goal of financial security. Easier said than done.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I loved floating down the DuPage River with my cousins in little blue plastic boats. We would go from downtown Naperville to our grandparent’s farm, Knoch Knolls, which was about five miles down stream. I’m sure we were way too young to be doing that on our own but times were different. Children had so much more freedom back then.
