Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Corradetti.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started being a journalist in pre-school. We had different toys to play with, but I always had a favorite. I would play inside the fake ‘TV” set. I absolutely loved giving the other kids the news of the day. Farther along in my education, I realized how much I loved language itself.
In high school, I began writing and became an Editor of our newspaper. Finally, when I got to college, I realized that I love public speaking. Then, it all made sense to me.
The perfect occupation would be broadcasting. It allows me to combine my love of writing with my love of performance and storytelling. I worked in Chicago for a bit after graduation with an internship working with ABC’s Windy City Live and another job at Tribune. Then one day, I got a call. It was from my old News Director to work at my current news station—WCIA 3 in Champaign, IL. I’ll be here 3 years in February. During my time here, I’ve become a news anchor, reporter, host & producer. No day is the same, and I am constantly learning something new. Ultimately, I’m looking to get back home to the Windy City and continue to do what I love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle for any journalist is not only getting your foot in the door, but getting it in the right door. I’ve learned that knowing people in this industry is crucial to success. I also believe that the bumps in the road make for a more worthwhile journey. It is from the hardships that we learn our greatest lessons. I have been very fortunate to work for my station. I think there are challenges with any job. I’ve learned to quickly adapt and roll with things as they happen. It is a very competitive field.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Alex Corradetti: Broadcast Journalist story. Tell us more about the business.
Everyday, I work on our five-hour morning show. I specialize in news, human-interest stories and trending topics. I created my own franchise called ‘Alex Around Town’ so I can share the stories of amazing people, places or things the community might not know about. I am most proud of the ability to share someone’s story, who might not otherwise get the opportunity to do so. My ability to connect with people and see what they’re truly passionate about is what sets me apart. I have always been very comfortable meeting new people, and fostering those connections. My parents instilled a strong work ethic at a young age. I never give up, and I attribute that to them. I also get to produce and anchor an hour of the morning show that is filled with news, local food, music and events. It’s unlike any other show in the area. I am also known as the ‘Pun Queen’. I believe that puns have truly helped me in every professional setting I’ve been in.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not sure luck has anything to do with someone’s career. I believe that hard work and dedication are the key to having a ‘lucky’ career. Sometimes, it’s just the right opening at the right time, allowing you to showcase your skills and move up.
Ultimately, I want to be back in Chicago. Right now, I am looking to continue to learn and grow as a journalist. Wherever I go next, I know it will someday lead me to that goal. I am most looking forward to continuing to share the stories of extraordinary people and showing them why I feel so blessed to do this job. When I am out on a story, I always know that is where I am meant to be. I can’t believe how lucky I am sometimes, and I never want this feeling to end.
