Life and Work with Joanna Worthington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Worthington.

Joanna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Who knew eyebrows were so important? Yet here I am, having just opened my new Microblading studio in Arlington Heights, trying to figure out how I got here and feeling incredibly lucky. My degree is actually in Fine Arts, but quickly after I graduated college, I realized I couldn’t be a starving artist forever. I transitioned from painting to graphic design and spent the better part of a decade working as an Art Director in the advertising industry. After I had my kids, I decided to take a couple years off and be a full-time mom, but as my kids got older, I started to get the itch to go back to work. The problem was I didn’t love the agency life anymore, and I had this nagging feeling that I wanted to pursue my love of beauty and makeup. I enrolled in aesthetics school and during my training, I saw an ad to get certified in microblading. I was immediately hooked and took to it really quickly, largely because of my artistic background, I think. I treat each client as if their brows are individual works of art. Color theory, shading, definition all play a role when mapping out a client’s brows. It’s that attention to detail and client personalization that keeps SABI Studio growing more and more each year.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle for me was switching careers. I had spent my whole adult life working in advertising and felt like I would be throwing it away if I switched industries. My husband is a Financial Advisor and he’s the one who really urged me to take the plunge. He told me that if I’m going to be working for the next 30 years of my life, I should do something I love. I’m so lucky he gave me the push I needed and supported me every step of the way. So, to anyone who is sitting at their desk, daydreaming about the road not taken and wondering if it’s too late… do it! I know it sounds cliche, but follow your gut and do something you love.

Please tell us about SABI Studio.
SABI Studio is synonymous with beautiful, natural microbladed brows. It’s no surprise that microblading has become the hot new trend in the beauty industry and the market is getting saturated with a lot of new artists. But SABI Studio’s microblading portfolio is filled with hundreds of brows showcasing a range of styles and techniques on a multitude of clients. Choosing a microblading artist is a big decision… I mean, it’s your face, after all! I think when women visit my social media page to check out the work, they are comforted to see all the different options; there is literally something for everyone. Also, I make it my personal mission to make sure all my clients are totally at ease and educated on the process and aftercare during the consultation to ensure the best results possible. The same variety of work and attention to detail can be seen in all of SABI Studio’s services, including PMU eyeliner and lash lifts as well.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I owe all of my success to both of my parents. My father is an entrepreneur and has always owned his own business, so I think that drive to work for myself is kind in my DNA thanks to him. He’s incredibly hard-working and such a successful business owner, but he always made time for his family. He would be home every day at 3 pm when we got done with school to help with homework, cook, dinner, and drive us to after-school activities. Watching him, I knew I wanted to work for myself and have that same work/family balance as he did. As for my mom, she is the most bubbly, beautiful, charismatic woman you’ll ever meet. I have definitely inherited her outgoing personality, and it’s a huge part of my success as well. Talking with each client, putting them at ease and having fun with them during their appointments is part of the reason SABI Studio has only ever received 5-star reviews.
