Today we’d like to introduce you to Rock Johnsen.
Rock, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I didn’t find my medium until I was already in college, I was supposed to be a lawyer until the fateful day I entered my first ceramics class. I knew within moments that I had been on the wrong path. That day changed everything about my expectations of the future. Most of interest derives from science and duality, the intersection where two opposing forces meld into something unexpected, that where I like to hang out.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make monsters out of comfort items, I intend this to be a reminder about life. Most experiences that end up being the most significant start uncomfortable feelings. The unusual items I make are a reminder that pushing comfort has great rewards.
In my other work I recreate geologic processes on the surface of ceramics with heat and chemistry. Science is very much over looked in creative spaces, when it is essentially the foundation of everything. I like to think my work shows a connection to the natural world through creativity.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Of course notoriety for what I do is a great, but for me influencing people to think more critically is the goal.
