Check out Milan Colovic’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milan Colovic.

Milan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Been drawing my whole life, but gone other way “briefly”, getting a Master degree in a traffic/civil engineering from the Belgrade University in Serbia.

Cause of the economic situation in my country engineering jobs are in low supply; worked briefly as an assistant professor on the same college; after that as a car parts salesman, and as a universal handyman meanwhile. At the same time getting in to caricatures more seriously, step by step.

All of the above made me realize that art is the way to go. Cutting all ties, I’ve started my own small business: Caricature Empire. Primarily based on the caricature we are doing pretty much everything connected with graphic design, drawing etc.

Starting with only one employee (me), now we have three fully active artist, one assistant and a couple of part time helpers.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is mainly based on caricatures drawing.

Hand drawn, unique, personalized caricature are the main thing for me. Giving people a chance to show their friends/family/partners what they mean to them using my art as medium.

The main reason for me going in this direction is giving a chance to common folk to have their own, unique
art/caricature, as they imagine it. Not to base all unique art of that quality on celebrities.

Going through Internet and other offers of the similar art, I noticed some coldness towards the customer (not to offend or demean anyone). It’s all pretty much based on some common ideas and concept, not so personalized. I believe that a person needs to feel special when ordering this kind of art, and to have all the freedom regarding a level of personalization (concept, idea, details, background etc.) as can be seen on the drawing on our page.

People can recognize that level of commitment that artist shows; Sometimes they regard us as a confidant (of course all discretion granted), so we can form a final idea that will suit their story best.

I strongly recommend everyone to try us, I believe it’s not just a caricature but a unique experience, as I’m sure everyone that got one would agree.

On the other hand, that satisfaction we get when we see the reaction of those that ordered or got our work as a present is priceless.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I believe, as we all could see, that caricaturists can have a unique role in “world’s events”. Given that, everything can have a great effect on you as an artist, because you can feel obligated to comment those events through your art. To try and explain to others what is going on through that critique your art is showing.

That personal existence that we are all fighting for everyday usually doesn’t give us much time for critiquing that situation world around us is in, but as artist we need to try at least to make a world a little better, because that opportunity is much closer to us than others. Artist has an opportunity to affect more people with its art and should use it; if not directly/aggressively then by making something beautiful that will at least make people smile if not laugh.

So as for that question “How events and issues affect my art”, main answer is that it makes me work harder to try to buffer them for others; trying to get other people less affected by issues by making them smile/laugh using my work. Those “issues” are a good fuel; however bad they are; that’s the only way you can look at them and stay normal.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
