Today we’d like to introduce you to Margi Kanter.
Margi, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a mother of 3 grown children and an eternal optimist. I started face painting approximately 16 years ago. I am a professional entertainer here in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
My father was a cartoonist so I gravitated towards the whimsical side of this art form. I created a line of animated characters that essentially changed the way people looked at face painting worldwide! I wrote my first instructional face painting book “Pick your Nose” based on these characters in 2010. This began the cartooning adventure of which changed my life! I have since written and published 3 additional bestselling instructional books.
I am an instructor at The Face and Body Art International Convention held in Orlando Florida.
http://www.fabaic.com. I also have several classes available on FABA TV, (Face and Body Art TV) of which reaches artists worldwide. http://www.fabatv.com. These opportunities have opened doors for me and enabled me to share my unique style of cartooning teaching at conventions and workshops in Canada, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Ireland and the UK as well as a full country teaching tour of Australia, Tasmania and Costa Rica.
I am sponsored by Fab/Superstar professional makeup of which are both vibrant & easy to remove.
I work independently as well as with many agents within the Chicago area performing at corporate and private events. My services are not limited to face painting but also include fabulous Airbrush tattoos, Beautiful henna, Simple balloon twisting, and characters including human statues. I am as comfortable at a child’s birthday party as I am at a formal corporate event or bustling outdoor festival. Lastly, I am humbled by the smile on each face I have been gifted to paint through the years. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of each event both corporate and private. I invite you to follow my work on both Instagram and face book.

“Bringing art to life!”
From my heart to yours,
Margi Kanter
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My face painting is unique. Although I am known for my silly cartoons. I am never afraid to paint the many request I am challenged with daily. I find joy in stepping outside of my comfort zone and taking it to the next level of awesome. I love the simple joy of both a child or adult when they look into the mirror to see what I have created for them. This is the magic. This is why I do what I do. I create smiles for a living! Given the opportunity to teach others my magic is awesome. Sharing my unique style of face painting worldwide is like living the ultimate dream!
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
The best way to not be a starving artist is to work both sides of your brain. Do not take time to have a pity party, instead focus that energy into marketing yourself. Reach out to agent’s festivals and companies direct. A hand shake in this day and age is so rare. Taking the time to meet people face to face is the key to developing strong business connections. Keep business and private life separate on Facebook. When posting in any public forums never speak poorly of your clients and others. Kindness goes a long way in creating healthy business and personal relationships. Money comes with hard work. Arrive early and be ready for your events with a smiling face. A first impression is a lasting impression.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
