Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Freemire.
Mackenzie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been entranced by making and dreaming things up since I was little. Whether it was creating ‘ gourmet recipes’ in the sandbox, to theater performances in a homemade set with imaginary costumes and scripts with my sisters. It really came into focus towards the end of high school for me though when I would spend hours in the studio instead of study hall or lunch, researching, practicing, and pushing myself. After graduation, I was pretty set in studying to become a photojournalist – which I think would have actually been pretty amazing – but I had a advisor at my university challenge me to try out some graphic design classes. The rest is history.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My creative body of work is pretty diverse as I split my time between photography, art direction, and graphic design. I love having different areas to experiment in, and see how they can start to bleed together. When it comes to design, I love working with brands and individuals to create brands that tell a clear story and speak to the heart of what they do. A strong brand is the hardest working part of any company – it’s always there as the voice and representative of what you’re doing. Being part of creating that with someone is really special.
When it comes to photography, this is where I really let myself experiment and try different things based on what’s inspiring me at the time. I love developing ideas, and then sharing them with other creatives to make the idea come to life and become even stronger through styling, hair and make-up design, and lighting. When we collaborate, everyone gets better. We learn, share ideas, grow, push each other. Early on in my creative career, I had to learn that working alone and getting all the credit for yourself will hinder you from opening your mind to the beauty of working with other people that see the world differently than yourself. One of the best lessons I’ve learned.
How can artists connect with other artists?
We become lonely as artists when we start believing that we have to do everything ourselves. Once we understand that we all have our strong skills, and someone else may have the strong skill that you aren’t quite mastered on yet, then you both make better work. Connect with people online, seek out other artists’ work, support other creatives, go to gallery shows & events, make stuff on weekends – there’s opportunity for this everywhere.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My website is being completely overhauled right now with my most recent work, so check back very soon to see it all there! (mackenziefreemire.com) Most of my other work can be found on my Instagram – @mackenziediane. You can also find my design and photo work by following along my personal project MOUTHWASH. Mouthwash is a creative house that I co-founded with two of my close friends, and there is a lot coming up for that, so keep an eye out! (@mouthwsh)
