Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Dixon.
Kenneth, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m 28 years-old so to be fair, my story is sort of long. That being said, I’ll just start with where my creative career began in 2014 when I embarked on a journey to New York for my first career job as a writer and visual artist. After spending two years at my job for a web publication, I had worked my way up to content manager of the website. I was writing and editing stories, covering events, managing social media, photographing products/events, and conducting/shooting my own interviews. After a while, I realized how the work environment wasn’t for me and not conducive to growth. I had plateaued in my position and craved more, so I decided to part ways with the company and become a full-time visual artist and writer. Before I’d embark on my new freelancing role, I’d travel Europe for a month, backpacking through 6 different countries, none of which I had ever been to. I had no official itinerary for my destinations, only a one-way ticket starting in Amsterdam, and a one-way ticket from Milan back to Chicago. Feeling refreshed and inspired upon my arrival back home, I hosted my first solo art exhibition displaying journals paired with visuals from my amazing trip. Since then I’ve spent some time traveling other places, including Dallas where I collaborated with a video production company for some months, assisting on bigger commercial video projects. Now I’m currently back home in Chicago doing pop-up shops for vendors, freelancing, working on my personal blog, and assisting other brands with capturing their vision.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a nomad first, writer second, and visual artist third, though those roles can change at the drop of a dime. I create and tell visual stories through video and photography. Occasionally I’ll pair the two with my writing. What’s inspires me to do what I do is simply passion, love, the art of creating, and positively influencing an audience at the root of everything. I try not to allow fear to dictate my comings and goings, so when people see my work or read it, they’re seeing me, in a vulnerable and raw state, doing what I love unapologetically.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Getting the right exposure to the right audience is what I feel is one of the biggest challenges artists face.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
