Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Little.
Jason, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started my shooting career by creating promo images for local bands and shooting nightclubs on the weekends. The late nights of bass thumping River North clubs and spray-tanned girls making duck faces eventually became a bit much to handle. I was happily transferred to restaurant reviews even though my knowledge and interest in Chicago’s burgeoning culinary scene were minimal. I drew inspiration from other local food photographers and pushed myself to treat every assignment as if my career depended on it. Working for local publications afforded me the opportunity to move into the commercial and advertising worlds, which now allow me to make artistically fulfilling images with brands that I love working with.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a conceptual food photographer located in the bustling Pilsen, a neighborhood of Chicago. My goal is to create images that elicit a sense of humor and challenges the viewer to think of what we eat beyond yummy social media fodder. My personal work explores the theme of socioeconomic issues, sexuality and how food is sold to us.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
For artists early on in their careers, work on finding and defining your voice all of the time. You may get busy working for clients to make ends meet doing work that may not speak to your long-term creative goals. Make a portfolio that shows the type of work you love and want to get paid for. If your portfolio simply showcases work that you were paid for but was someone else’s vision, that is the work you will continue to get hired to do. Find your voice and get heard by the right audience.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
