Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Pflaumer.
Sydney, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always done art, as far back as I can remember, but I never imagined I could make a career out of it. At the age of 18, I started traveling around with tattoo conventions as a body suspension performer. Through that, I made quite a few friends in the tattoo industry, and started to think of it as a possibility. My first job in the industry was offered to me by a local shop owner, to clean and keep after the shop, with the idea of an apprenticeship in mind. That opportunity never panned out, but at that point I was already determined to learn to tattoo. I hopped around different shops for a while, until I finally found somewhere to settle down in 2014.
I spent nearly four years there, learning from all of my wonderful coworkers and the friends I had made along the way. That’s where I would say I really started my career. At the beginning of 2017, I finally moved out of the suburbs and in to the city of Chicago. At the beginning of this year, I decided it was time for my career to follow here as well. I currently work at Old Town Tatu and have been very excited for all of the new opportunities to work and learn with new artists. Currently I am focusing on learning new skills and pushing my art more, as well as seeking opportunities to travel with my work.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a tattoo artist. Being that I make art for other people as my career, I can’t say a lot of it has a clear message, as that is determined by my client. In my personal art, I have recently been really inspired by classical art, figure drawing. and portraiture. I am at a point where I am trying to push myself into as many mediums as possible and to always be learning.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Everyone I respect has always said “never stop learning”. That has always stuck with me.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My main platform for displaying my work is through my Instagram. You can find me @metacogniti0n. The best way for anyone to support me would of course be to come and get tattooed, otherwise I am available to commission custom artwork. I handle consultations for those things through my email, which is srpflaumer@gmail, com, or also through my Instagram. In the future, I would like to start doing small runs of prints to be available for clients to purchase if they would like. All in time.
Word of mouth is an artist’s greatest form of promotion. If you have any friends in any of the arts, tell your other friends, spread the word. That’s the best way we support each other.
