Art & Life with Scott Deters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Deters.

Scott, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a 32-year-old man with Cerebral Palsy. I use a wheelchair and an augmentative communication device for speech. My family has always been interested in painting and expressing themselves through their artwork. At a young age I tried several methods of painting – finger painting, painting with a pointer mounted to a hat, using the hand over hand technique and various other methods. While all of these were somewhat successful I still lacked direct input into my paintings. After discovering a technique using a laser to direct an assistant I was finally able to be in complete control of my paintings. I am just starting to experiment with online paint programs using a Head Mouse.

I have had several successful shows and have sold my paintings statewide. I also do presentations around the state showcasing my artwork and promoting the possibilities of all people with disabilities. My goal is not only to express myself through my artwork but to inspire other people with disabilities to reach their full potential.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I have always used acrylics to paint. Many of my paintings reflect my emotions or help me express myself. I like to experiment with different color combinations and try new techniques.

My paintings are mostly abstract and usually done on a pre-stretched canvas. They can be interpreted differently by each person who sees them. I would like people to focus on my abilities and not my disabilities. I also like giving presentations to showcase my artwork and inspire others.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I belong to an art group at my workplace and by being available to give presentations I can connect with other artists. Much of my success started with a Facebook page – social media is key to promotion!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My artwork is available on Facebook at Scott Deters, Abstract Originals and can be seen at my home or can be viewed through email, private message or on request.

My artwork can be supported through “liking” and “sharing” my Facebook page or by purchasing my paintings. Help me spread the word that disabilities can be turned into abilities!
