Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Sobolewski.
Oscar, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m currently 23, and I’ve been shooting for about 2 years, so my journey is still relatively new. I started shooting in early 2017. After using a friend’s DSLR, I decided to buy one and learn more about photography. Initially, I shot a lot of modified cars, whether that was paid or unpaid, as well as abandoned places. Slowly I developed a more artistic approach to everything I shoot. With the help of some good friends and social media, I’ve been working with models and brands, as well as an upcoming musician, and started getting more into cinematography.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
A majority of my images showcase a different perspective on urban environments. The city is essentially a massive canvas, and you decide what belongs on it. Thousands of people go throughout their daily routine without noticing details around them, such as a recent foreclosure of a building, or a new one being built. I try to remove this subconscious blindfold and show the same architecture and scenery from completely different point of view. Whether I’m photographing cityscapes or people, I attempt to recreate what I was feeling through my editing. There are good images, and there are images that make you feel something.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Being polite and respectful as well as showing good intentions goes a long way. A simple DM can start a conversation or even a comment on someone’s Instagram post. To further elaborate on “good intentions”, I specifically mean reaching out to those who inspire you and genuinely wanting to create content together.
Don’t assume people will show you/take you to spots. Find a friend and grow together. There’s nothing more inspirational than seeing other artists and your own art evolve in front of you. No matter what you create or how long you’ve been doing it, there are definitely thousands of people you can connect with and create new friendships.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Instagram is the most immediate (@_obscvre) however my website has much more content at full quality. There you could find numerous abandoned locations, portraits, street photography, and cityscapes.
