Art & Life with Meosha Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meosha Thomas.

Meosha, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I served 10 years in the United States Navy. I returned home to Chicago in 2010. I felt disconnected, isolated and alone. Traditional talk therapy did not help me as much as art therapy did. Art therapy not only reconnected me to my artistic side but to the world.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I use acrylic and mixed media. My art depicts the Black experience through a feminine lens. In this current climate of racial tensions, I show the beauty, diversity and strength of Black women. A nation can rise no higher than its women, so I paint empowered women.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Current events and issues definitely affect my art. I believe as an artist it is my responsibility to record currents events through my art. Artists are like historians and advocates. Our art is an account of the times so when future generations look back, we have left them a view of the world through our art. As advocates, we are also accountable to raise awareness to the issues and injustices that are currently happening. Our art becomes our voice.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My artwork is on display at Local Color Art Studio or you can follow me on Instagram.
