Today we’d like to introduce you to Madalyn Martin.
Madalyn, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I was a little girl my dad would take me on rides through the country on the back of his motorcycle. The whole time I would sing about whatever I saw. I didn’t know I was writing music; I just did what made me happy. The funny part about it is that I didn’t know he could hear me until he gave me a tape recorder to keep my songs. I was so embarrassed because little did I know the songs weren’t just for me. I learned early on that music is meant to be shared.
In middle school, I started playing guitar and making YouTube videos. But sadly I had to take them down because my classmates made fun of me for them. Looking back, I should’ve been glad that I had an audience but at the time I just wanted to be accepted. I never really fit into the “in-crowd” so again and again I turned to music to express myself. I am finally comfortable with myself and my music. Being weird is the new cool. I know a lot of young women are going through the same thing and I hope that my story will help them even in some small way.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a songwriter. I create music based on emotion and experiences. I have always turned to music for self-expression but it is not only for me. The experiences I go through are common to all. They are my struggles and my victories. I share my music in hopes to give my listeners a new perspective.
An example of this is a song I’ve written about my childhood. Our family vacations were camping or swimming in a river somewhere. We didn’t have extravagant vacations and money to spend but to me, this was “the destination”. I wrote this song to share with others that it’s not what you have, it’s how you feel about what you have. I don’t need extravagant cities and experiences, to be happy. I have amazing memories just in my backyard.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Being an artist can be lonely. If any artist feels lonely please reach out to me! I would love to chat. Starting a band has helped me become less lonely. It gives me that once a week interaction with people that share the same goal. I have met a few band members on bandmix.com It also helps to go out and supporting other artists. Even if you have to venture out alone, just stop by, connect and get back to making music.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
