Art & Life with Danny Sobor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Sobor.

Danny, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up on the Northwest side, the first place I ever really saw art was on the blue line. The train would go by wheat pastes and murals near Logan Square and I thought they were magic and I wanted to make them. A lot of Chicago art has a strong graphic style, from the stuff in the street to the Imagists. That stuff heavily influenced me early on. I work as a painter in Detroit now and I still focus on representation which I think has a lot to do with the visual environment I grew up in.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
For the last year I’ve worked with oil paint and I plan on sticking with it, the medium gives me the most visual freedom and control. The style I’ve been developing focuses on visual and contextual pluralism. I try to bring together imagery from different sources, art historical movements and time periods. Combining the imagery into a unified composition equalizes it and blurs pictorial hierarchies and also reflects the way we consume visual culture. If I go on Instagram I’m inundated with images from across time and space, I want my paintings to reflect that consumption while simultaneously referencing painting history.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Treat art like a job. It’s not all fun and games, sometimes it’s hard and it sucks but that’s ok and good. I wish someone told me to work as a gallery or artist assistant when I was younger. Now that I have, I see that it’s a good way to learn more about the world and make connections.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a show coming up at Playground Detroit in late August and another show I can’t say much about yet in San Diego in 2019. I’m really excited for both. I’ll be posting about them on my IG that’s the easiest place to find info. Some of my earlier work is also available at Chicago Truborn and Galerie F.
