The Whooping Crane (calls) is on view at The Arts Club Chicago from now through February 24th. There is much great work to see by many talented colleagues. The Whooping Crane (calls) is part of the ongoing project Last Calls; photo based work depicting the most threatened birds of North America. These “Portraits” are abstracted images printed on silk. They are constructed using Spectrograph images that depict the sound waves of actual bird calls. The marks are photographed, layered, and toned with hues found within the color spectrum of each bird species. The surprising colors of eyes, talons, skin, coupled with the delicate markings of delineating sounds are reminiscent of hieroglyphics. This language of sound traces last calls in the wild, and in some cases, are all that is left of certain extinct species. The Sound component plays from a parabolic speaker above consisting of archival field recordings from the 1950's of Whooping Crane calls and scientists describing field and viewing conditions. Re-contextualized and re-compiled, In collaboration with artist Walter Kitundu. Sound recordings courtesy of The Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
