Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Hall.
Tyler, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started nightclub singing when I was 18 at a local venue in Sarasota, Florida. I had won a talent contest there where the prize was a slot in their Wednesday night show cast. I started performing every other week and then every week and sometimes, on weekends, too. After about a year, I decided to take a shot at chasing my singing dream in Orlando. I moved with hopes of breaking into theme park entertainment. After not being cast many times, I decided to turn back to night clubs and searching for opportunities to be heard. It was at that point, I heard of a local LGBT nightclub that had a weekly talent contest on Tuesday nights called: Pulse Nightclub. I would enter every week, trying new songs and new looks. And over time, it paid off. I was growing as an entertainer and getting hired to sing at venues all over the state. I also started entering in national pageant systems, and have ended up top 10 in those competitions.
Then at the end of 2015, I took a leap of faith and submitted an online audition for a Chicago burlesque show. After being cast in the show, I moved up and began the pursuit of my singing dream here. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with many shows and talented entertainers ranging from aerial performers, to drag queens, to burlesque dancers, to vocalists. I now have the pleasure of working with Boylesque, a twice a month male burlesque show that happens at a venue called Charlie’s in Boystown/Lakeview. I also travel often to states such as Wisconsin, Indiana, and Florida to perform. I also have had the chance to record and release two original songs, titled “Last Call Love” and “16 (feat. Kezra Leon), on iTunes and other streaming services. I never thought I would get this far in the pursuit of my singing dreams. I am grateful for every encounter and opportunity I have had along the way, and continue to look forward to what the future holds.
Has it been a smooth road?
Working in the arts is never easy, no matter what your art is. You go through many people telling you “no” until you finally get a “yes”. Emotionally, sometimes, it takes its toll and you end up doubting yourself and your own self-worth. It’s at those times though that I look back at where I started, to where I am now and see that while at times the pace may be slow, it’s all baby steps towards my dream.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a singer in the nightlife industry, I primarily specialize in singing pop music, but also sing rock (modern and classic), Broadway, and some oldies. What sets me apart from others is that I have a collection of books and songs for a variety of audiences and occasions. I can pull out a suit or tux and sing songs by artists such as Billy Joel, the Four Seasons, or Elton John for a wedding or theater event. Then, I can turn around and pull out a custom red costume jacket and leather pants and break out into Neon Trees, Walk the Moon, or Kings of Leon for a nightclub.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Chicago is an excellent place for entertainers like myself. There are opportunities all around. To anybody just starting out, I would tell them to go see local shows and performers and talk with them about all the work they do. It’s those kinds of interactions that got me where I am now.
