Meet Trailblazer Julie Dwyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Dwyer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2008, my position was eliminated during the recession.

I was in the early stages of my first pregnancy and our home (like so many others) was suddenly underwater.

Realizing my job aspects would be limited at best with a growing tummy, I decided to do some freelance work for various cosmetic and skin care lines.

Several months later, I eventually gave birth to our beautiful daughter. My husband and I decided that me being a stay at home mom would be best for our family as he continued growing his Culinary career in Chicago.

After being home with my daughter for a year and a half, I knew I must return to the work, full-time.

We were outgrowing our condo and my husband began to experience burnout at work. We knew we needed a big change but didn’t know what was next.

Late one night, I came across a Craigslist Ad for a business opportunity in Algonquin.

It was to rent your own studio suite for beauty professionals.

I had been a Licensed Esthetician since 2003 and knew I had to build a clientele with any other job opportunity so why not just do it for myself?

After sleeping on it, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head.

I mentioned it over coffee to  my husband, Todd and he said

Yes, that’s what we’re doing!

I spoke with my parents who also felt, if you can do it, then go for it!

We rented our our condo and went through the process.

Picked out our studio suite and kind of never looked back. We figured what have we got to lose, except everything. It was like a roll of the dice but a very exciting one!

In order to make this happen we moved in with my parents for six months. Most people we told our plan to thought we were CRAZY, but something about it just felt right and we rolled with it.

Six months in, I realized we should hire someone as business was popping. My husband, Todd said, “I’ll be your Esthetician.”

Within a week, he had enrolled at a local Beauty College and was on his way to becoming my new Esthetician.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anything you have a true passion for is easy. Whether it’s your career, business, marriage or friendships.

Todd happened to graduate from his Esthetics program just in the Knick of time.

In April 2013, I was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma in my left arm. This was not ideal news to say the least.

I perform body waxing and facials for a living so this was a major setback that we had to delicately navigate.

Timing wise, we were so grateful to know that Todd could step right in and handle the business, while I recovered.

Since then, we’ve continued to grow  stronger personally and professionally while enjoying a healthy work, life balance.

We’d love to hear more about Face Value Skin Spa & Wax Studio.
We are a husband/wife waxing & facial studio. We specialize in the Brazilian wax for men & woman as well as facials and chemical peel services.

We are super pumped to be recognized by CBS Local Chicago as “Best Places for Waxing.”

But what we’re most proud of is the great relationships we’ve built and maintained with both clients and the community.

I think what sets us apart is having the option of a male and female Esthetician. This way every client can feel completely comfortable from the moment their service begins.

As a small business, we take pride in everything we do so customer service is key and we really strive to make sure every client leaves happy with their experience.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later?
My husband and I grew up similarly. We were taught to work hard for everything you want to do in life. Therefore, a strong work ethic has always been instilled.  I do think that has played a major role for us in becoming successful in our lives personally and professionally.
