Today we’d like to introduce you to Thais Fry.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My love for photography started as a child. I have vivid memories of my parents documenting our family vacation or any special or ordinary functions in our daily lives. Being a child from the ’80s, there was always an excitement to see the photos revealed after picking them up in the film store. Over the years, on family gatherings, we would go through boxes and boxes of old photographs. They are time machines that not only take us back to the past but also tell the story of my parents, us and everything in between. After graduating from high school, I enrolled in film school and learned photography in the old style way. The smell of the dark room, the quietness, the meticulosity of the handling the negatives and blowing up your own images brought me calm. I kept photography as a side hobby and a creative outlet. In 2014, after getting married, I fell in love with everything wedding related. Our wedding photographer, a close friend of mine from film school, did an absolutely amazing job and I loved the way our wedding photos made me feel (and still do!) when we saw them. I started second shooting for local studios, attended workshops and shot any type of session to gain the confidence and know-how to call myself a professional photographer. In 2015, I shoot my first weddings as lead photographer and I loved everything about it. I started THAIS Photography in 2016 and I have been shooting mainly weddings and couples since then.
Please tell us about your art.
I feel the most inspired by couples. That’s why I love documenting weddings. I’m all about the experience. I believe if you like the way something makes you feel, you will love the results that come from it. My approach focuses on creating the atmosphere for my subjects to be genuinely connected to each other on their wedding day or during their session. What does that mean? On their wedding day, is super important for them to be able to focus on each other, take a deep breath, slow down and appreciate the love that brought them to this point in life. That’s something that I start nurturing in my clients on their engagement session. I ask questions to start an open dialogue, to use words and action to express feelings. The goal is to reach comfort, intimacy and be able to capture 100% of who they are together. Every couple has their own love language and no couple is the same. The results are photos that are unique to each relationship, to each couple.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I do. As a photographer that feel truly inspired by love, I don’t categorize love by gender, race, or whatever other types of label society puts on it. Love is love and it’s beautiful. The couple’s interactions, their little love gestures, their secret language. the way the lock eyes or laugh at each other. To be able to portrait love as is, that’s my goal and that is the main subject of my photographs.
