Meet Tameka Grant of Sassy Thrifters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tameka Grant.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tameka. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
About 4 years ago I turned to thrifting as a form of therapy after losing my mom.

My mom was the consummate thrift gangsta! LOL. She’s been thrifting all my life. But I fell in love with it about 4 years ago. Terribly missing my mom I began to frequent her favorite thrift stores as a way to feel connected to her. Growing up I gave my mom an extremely difficult time for purchasing my items second hand. Now I encourage thousands to be more thrifty. The irony, who knew thrifting turned therapy into passion would empower people all over the states.

The actual group page – Sassy Thrifters was created April 2015. It all started from random people asking where’d I purchase certain items.

When replying “I got it from a thrift store” was unbelievable to most, my sister Naketa suggested I actually take people where I shop since they didn’t believe me. So one day I posted on facebook “hey, what if I rented a bus to show you all which thrift stores I shop, would you believe me then”, Facebook went nuts. LOL. Our first “thrifting in Chicago” bus tour happened June 2015 and the rest is history. 😉

Since its inception our group has evolved into stimulating our community more: we host bi-monthly vendor markets, thrift bus tours, estate sale bus tours, DIY workshops, fitness workshops, book club meet-ups, traveling club, back to school drives, mommy make-overs, tea brunches, and quarterly philanthropy volunteer work to name a few. we’ve yet to scratch the service. 🙂

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was all fun & games the first year. 🙂

But as the group grew bigger, the demands became larger, and my need to provide this fast-growing platform relevant content added an overwhelming amount of pressure. I was all over the place. At one point it was difficult to pinpoint the true purpose of it all. trying to be everything to everyone was a challenge as well.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sassy Thrifters story. Tell us more about the business.
Sassy Thrifters promotes a frugal yet quality lifestyle that transcends fashion. It’s a lifestyle! In supporting our movement, you, in fact, support a community who seek to educate, empower, recycle, network and Bless others.

We specialize in dispelling myths that thrifting is a poor man’s sport. We are known for making “thrifting” cool. we have people all over the states screaming “I only paid $5 for this dress”. hehe.

As a company, I’m most proud of helping others not be ashamed of being frugal, and doing away with pretentiousness and breaking the bank to impress people who don’t care about them. It’s really gratifying that being who I give others permission to be themselves.

My ability to be transparent is what sets me apart. Also being the ambivert I am: I have the ability to be extremely social, and be alone, and receive a high burst of energy from both. 😉

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck nor do I believe God has favorites he chooses to give high favor too. When people say “you’re so lucky or you’re highly favored” I cringe.

Everything that has happened in my life both personal & business was either by effort or lack thereof.
