Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Anderson.
Suzanne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started sewing at the age of 6. I have always had an interest and passion for fabrics, sewing and design. I attended Design school and graduated with a BFA in fashion design. I started designing wedding gowns when a friend asked me to make her wedding gown. After that I was hooked on bridal apparel. I started my business in 1998 out of my living space. In 2001 I leased a studio in the West Loop. My services included custom, one of a kind gowns along with wholesaling a line of bridesmaids’ gowns.
I took a break in 2010 and went back to finish my Bachelors of Fine Arts. After a break I have re-launched my business. I am working on a new line of wedding gowns. Samples of the gowns will be completed by the fall for a spring 2018 delivery. My style aesthetic includes my signature 1940’s styling with a modern twist. All my gowns are made from the finest 100% silk fabrics.
Has it been a smooth road?
No it has not been a smooth road. Struggles have been finding financing for a start-up. Getting exposure and not having the proper marketing.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is a Sole Proprietorship. I am the Lead Designer/owner of the company. I specialize in custom and one of a kind designs. I am known for a vintage 1940’s styling with a modern twist. My gowns are designed with clean elegant lines and styling. I am most proud of a beautiful finished product. My retro styling sets me apart from others. I have a unique style that may not necessarily be for the masses. I have a niche’ market.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes I do, I think the Chicago area is a good place to start a business. I would recommend someone starting a business to start here. Other apparel central hubs like NYC or LA are oversaturated and hold a lot of competition for someone in Fashion.
The apparel business in Chicago has suffered and many companies have gone out of business. I know the city of Chicago is supporting the Chicago fashion industry, but there is always room for improvement.
