Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Wohlner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began working in residential interior design very informally; I helped friends of mine as they were designing and decorating their own homes. These projects interested and invigorated me, and I knew I wanted to explore interior design professionally. I returned to school and ultimately received a degree from Harrington College of Design. In the nearly 20 years since, I have completed a wide range of residential projects in the Chicagoland area and beyond, and continue to enjoy every moment of being an interior designer.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The beginning was certainly difficult, and different from what many others in the industry experience, because my career in interior design began when I was in my late 30’s. It took time and patience to learn how to juggle the needs of homeowners, manage projects with contractors, and generally learn to navigate the design world.
Please tell us about Stephanie Wohlner Design.
My firm specializes in high-end residential interior design. I am most known for my ability to mix old treasures with new pieces in both contemporary and traditional homes. While I am thrilled when I receive compliments on my work or my designs are featured in the press, I truly pride myself on the personalized attention and care I provide each client. When a client hires Stephanie Wohlner Design, I personally dedicate my time and energy to bringing their dreams to life, creating a space that feels uniquely theirs.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In the beginning, it’s difficult to maintain boundaries, or to even have knowledge of what those boundaries should be. Providing clients, contractors, and other collaborators with firm boundaries, is key to the success of the project – and to my own sanity as a business owner.
After many years, I’ve developed a method of working that feels healthy and maintainable for all parties involved.
