Meet Shayna Norwood of Steel Petal Press in Logan Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Norwood.

Shayna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was first introduced to letterpress printing while earning my BFA at San Francisco Art Institute.

Steel Petal Press was born when I designed and printed greeting cards for personal use to send to friends while still in grad school working towards my MFA. I started selling the cards at a few local shops, and the company took off from there.

We now have three presses, four employees and an intern. Our cards are carried in over 200 stores across the country including Paper Source. In 2016 we moved to our flagship studio and retail shop in Logan Square where we are open to the public 7 days a week. Our brick and mortar retail shop carries Steel Petal Press greeting cards printed by hand, in-house and other gift items from independent designers around the country. If you come at the right time you might even catch the presses in action.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since the beginning, it has been a very slow, long uphill battle. The first few years, I really struggled to find my voice, and to make unique products that would stand out in the marketplace. When it was just me I worked all the time and hardly made any money. I struggled a lot with self-doubt and insecurity, but it was small victories that gave me strength and kept me going. All the small steps eventually added up to where I am today.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Steel Petal Press – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Steel Petal Press is a Chicago-based design and letterpress studio specializing in greeting cards, stationery and gift items. We make beautifully letterpress printed greeting cards with sincere, humorous sentiments. Our design aesthetic uses clean and modern designs, funny sayings, and sometimes-edgy language. Greeting cards are our first love, but we also offer a selection of letterpress gift tags, mugs, wrap and posters, and gift items.

Our mission is to share beauty and humor with the world through handmade stationery. We create products that help people celebrate and connect through life’s important moments. We are committed to preserving the history of letterpress by educating the public on the process and craft of letterpress printing.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our current plans are to continue building our wholesale line of greeting cards and expand our reach in retail shops around the country. Having moved into our retail storefront less than a year ago, we are still working on refining and running the brick and mortar shop. Our wholesale line and retail shop keep us pretty busy these days, so we want to make sure those are running smoothly before we delve into any big new projects.
