Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Fuehring.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My first camera was disposable, and I was only 2 years young. I immediately fell in love with the concept of being able to capture a moment, whether candid or staged. Ever since then, I’ve been consumed. Following my friends and family around everywhere I went during my younger years definitely gave me the practice I needed. However, it was just after turning 18 during a photography workshop in Bolivia when I found how important it was to not only snap a quick photo, but also be able to effectively relay a story/message for any viewers to come. With this gaining knowledge, I was able to look deeper into why I do what I do. It helped me develop a sense of intent.
Unfortunately then, still being 18, I stumbled across a couple life altering obstacles. First of which was being diagnosed with Lyme Disease, and the second was having my parents move to Europe. Now, I am the youngest of 4 girls, and happened to be the only one living with my parents at the time. At this point everything seemed to be going down the drain only to leave me in a state of pain and loneliness; I knew a change was in season. While having many opportunities to enhance my craft such as: assisting and photographing weddings, portraits, school projects; etc, it wasn’t until after moving to Chicago when I realized how hard I was going to have to work, in order to tell the stories I needed to tell, as well as keeping my mental and physical health in line. When all else appeared to be failing, my photography remained a consistent light. I couldn’t be more grateful for the people, design, structure, and love this beautiful city has presented to me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth roads are usually smooth because they’ve been frequented. I believe the road I’ve been chosen to walk is a rough one to say the least. Whether it’s dealing with my inconstant health, the always lingering question of “Am I good enough?”, or simply sacrificing just to grind at times when most people are asleep; I find comfort in knowing that as long as I have the breath in my body, then I’m here for a reason. “If there is no struggle, there is no progress…” – Fredrick Douglas

I like to concentrate mainly on the candid aspect of photography, often shooting various shows and concerts throughout Chicago’s many venues and festivals. I work to take photos that will build confidence, and self love; I want people to feel beautiful in every picture that I take. Although, being a fly on the wall is great, I also love to curate creative outdoor and studio photoshoots as well. I couldn’t be more proud of how fast this business has grown in such a short amount of time. Something that I believe sets me apart, is my willingness and desire to connect with the subject I’m shooting. I not only want to tell / make stories visible, but also want the viewer to feel something while looking at my work.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As far as the future goes, your guess is as good as mine. I live day to day working as hard as I possibly can on that given day; which leaves little room for expectations. As long as I am working to build myself, and those around me as well as making an effort to take steps forward every day; I can trust that whatever happens is meant to happen. I plan to continue forward doing what I do best, learning, growing and appreciating anything and everything that comes my way.
