Meet Robyn Ackerman of Pop Digital Marketing in Skokie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Ackerman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Robyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’d like to say my journey began when I was a child. I was the kid that was always selling something to my neighbors or inventing new businesses with my siblings and cousins. I am fortunate to come from incredible parents that taught me the value of working hard and most importantly working with honesty and integrity.

Growing up, my passion hovered in the arts and education. I sketched in my free time, performed in theater and played musical instruments. I truly loved creating things! I also enjoyed working with children, specifically those with special needs. Throughout college and after, I worked as a teacher and aid for children with special needs. After I got married, I took a position as a theater teacher at an amazing enrichment center that had just opened. I later became the director of the center and took on marketing responsibilities.

In the following years, I was able to combine my desire to create art (through building campaigns, websites, strategy, logos, even coaching business leaders on marketing operations and public speaking etc.) and my work with children, by marketing for various pediatric healthcare organizations.

By 2013, I had 3 young children of my own and needed to figure out a better work-life balance as a mom and full-time marketing executive. One week, 3 different companies approached me to do consulting for their businesses, and that was when I decided to form my company. Thankfully, my wonderful husband was extremely supportive and pushed me to pursue building my own company.

I am now a mom to 4 energetic kids, have an office in Skokie right by their school and employ seasoned marketing experts to implement client campaigns!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While there are always a couple of small bumps along the way, I have to admit that it has overall been incredibly smooth. A great lesson I learned in the beginning, is the importance as a consultant to truly understand your client’s industry and to fit in with their company culture. Now, I am at a point where I can choose the clients we take on to ensure we can offer them the best services and always provide top value.

There will always be competition, but I believe my consulting, my team’s extensive knowledge, and our drive to bring success to our clients is so unique that I am never worried about getting lost in a sea of other marketing companies. The fact that I have been able to grow my company organically and steadily through constant client referrals is a testament to this.

After working in the marketing industry for over 17 years, and running my business for almost 6 of those years, I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my clients. I see the trust my clients have in my company and it pushes me to work harder to bring them even more success. I often refer to my clients as partners, because we are really part of the same team. Once we start working together, we set a goal and work as a joint company to achieve it!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is simple: It’s measured by how happy I can make people. I feel successful when I see leads pouring in for a client and know that his company can now give bonuses to its employees. I feel successful when I see my client’s excitement about their new website. I feel success when I am able to take a CEO’s call at 10 pm and provide a solution to his/her problem. I feel successful at the end of the day watching my children and husband play guitar and sing Tom Petty songs. As long as my company can bring happiness to those utilizing my services, I consider it successful. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with incredible and meaningful companies and I look forward to making more businesses grow!
