Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Riggs.
Rick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Handwritten here in 2006 with the idea that recording could be a more efficient, affordable, and inclusive process than I had been exposed to in in the past. 11 years has gone by in the blink of an eye but I am still equally obsessed with finding ways to make this process work best for everyone that comes through here.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, I would not describe it as a smooth road. Nor would I assume anyone operating a small business would say differently. The first couple of years were really just an exercise in survival. Can I figure out how to run this place in a way that people find valuable? Can I keep my sanity through these growing pains? Can I afford, literally, to figure this out?
Again, I’m sure those thoughts are not wildly different from the majority of small business owners- but after some time, I started to figure out the rhythm of running this place in a way that makes sense for both myself and those people making a habit out of coming here.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Handwritten Recording story. Tell us more about the business.
Handwritten Recording is recording studio that has been on Belmont Ave since 2006. Specializing in recording, mixing, and mastering audio- I operate this place with the knowledge that no two projects are the same and that everything I work on is the most precious thing to whomever I’m working with.
I am most proud of the fact that I am still here, working, and busy. It’s not something I take for granted in the slightest. I still feel an overwhelming sense of pride when I turn the key here every day and an equally overwhelming sense of gratitude the moment someone decides to trust me with their audio.
I don’t know what sets me apart from others. Probably a question better suited for someone who continues to work with me. However, I will say that I just try and genuinely care about every person and project that comes through here. I know the leap of faith it takes for someone to get to me, and it is something that I try and repay every minute we are together.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Not entirely sure. I don’t know that it would be healthy, or productive, to chalk up any of the highs or lows around here to something as fickle as luck.
