Today we’d like to introduce you to Resham Mendi, MD.
Resham, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a doctor and mom of 4 boys. After 4 pregnancies and a few ER visits with my kids, I noticed how expensive health care really is from a patient’s perspective. As a radiologist, it occurred to me that it would be a great service to the community to have imaging centers that could provide high-quality care without the inflated prices of the hospitals.
I took over Bright Light Radiology in 2015, after about 10 years in practice. I went in with the mission of providing medical imaging supervised and driven by a doctor. Being on-site as medical director, I provide personal, patient-driven care, and in an outpatient setting we were able to provide affordable pricing. We expanded last year to our second location in Bedford Park, after such a great reception from the North side community.
With rising health care costs and higher deductibles, we began to see many patients who had been looking for exactly what we were providing. I saw patients who had been waiting months to get an x-ray or MRI because they were afraid of the costs, and others who hadn’t had a mammogram in years. These patients are often excited to find us, as a low-cost high-quality alternative, and we are so happy to provide care for them.
We now provide MRI, CT, ultrasound, mammography, x-ray to the communities in the Northwest and South suburbs of Chicago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any growing practice has struggles. For us, it was how to handle the logistics of growth– the influx of calls and orders that we started getting as doctors and patients found out about the services we provide.
Luckily, with good management and very dedicated staff, we have a system for scheduling and patient flow that works very well.
Please tell us about Bright Light Radiology and Skan Imaging.
We are a medical imaging center. We do MRI, CT, ultrasound, x-ray, mammograms, and other procedures. But, most importantly, we are not just a business. We are a medical practice, run by doctors, which ensures the best patient care. This is what sets us apart. Having our doctors supervising the studies, and being available to work with other doctors in planning patient care, is what allows us to provide such high-quality care.
We are well known in our communities for providing this high quality at affordable cost.
I am so proud that we are able to provide this kind of service and care to so many patients who need it.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories is of my best friend from Kindergarten, Vicky. She lived down the street from me. We used to bike to a tree halfway between our homes and leave secret messages for each other under a rock. I loved going over there and finding a note from her.
Now, decades later, Vicky (Dr. Vicky Lin) and I are partners and work together at BLR/Skan! I feel fortunate that I get to work with one of my oldest friends.

- Above prices are for self-pay. Insurance pricing at our facility may be slightly higher than this. Pricing at hospitals is usually 5 to 10 times higher! As an example, average local MRI price at hospitals is about $3200.
