Today we’d like to introduce you to Remsy Atassi.
Remsy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Emulsion began as a side project that was created by Remsy Atassi & Sean Kelly in early 2017. Sean & I both were frequent collaborators in the Chicago commercial video production scene and also actively involved in all kinds of creative projects.
We created Emulsion with the purpose of creating, sharing, and promoting stories from the creative communities of Chicago. We approach things with a lo-fi vintage style, often incorporating mixed media and analog technologies in our work. We love to shoot film (both motion picture & photography) and try to cultivate a lot of vibe in everything we produce.
Right now, we are focused on a lot of music content – we have a monthly series called EMULSION LIVE that makes doc-style performance videos with DIY and underground Chicago artists. We also promote artists through photo essays, music videos, and our blog emulsionlab.com.
In addition to music content we are working on new programming for 2018 that will highlight other types of artists, as well as scripted & docu styled content.
At it’s heart, Emulsion is a production & publishing platform that is designed to create great content and promote Chicago artists.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A big part of our process has been finding new ways to attract and develop the right audience for our content. We see a lot of great artists who have trouble getting their work out there and we want to be a resource for them to promote their work. Developing our voice and finding an audience has been our central challenge too, but it’s a core part of our mission. It’s not just about creating great work. We also know that we need to find ways to connect with an audience.
Fortunately, we have had a huge team of collaborators and volunteers who believe in the mission and help us get out there – in addition to just elevating the work.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Emulsion – what should we know?
Emulsion isn’t so much a company as it is a creative collective. Our team’s background is from video production, design, and photography – so definitely our strongest resource is the quality of our content. Making beautiful & engaging content is a top priority.
In addition, we are kind of obsessed with incorporating analog technologies in our work. It’s literally in our name – but we just love working with film. Both the texture and the deliberate process help us make work that stands out.
Right now, we are definitely best known for our music journalism and video content that is crafted with a really high image quality. Going forward we’re excited to expand our reach into all types of creative content in the city.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Definitely – there is a big team of people who help bring things together.
Sean Kelly is our other Co-Founder, we make the decisions for the project together and with a lot of help and consultations from the rest of the team.
Jeff Breakey at Goodwolf Music manages all of the recording and music elements. He’s a top-notch mixer & engineer with over a dozen Grammy nominations. In addition, he is a great musician too!
Our assignment photographers Kelly Fleming, Rachel Ruttle, and Bethany Puterbaugh have all contributed a lot to the visual style.
Amanda Staples is leading new art outreach and helping us get the message out there in the local community.
Jeff Perlman helps us with artist outreach and is also another Director in our roster who is out there helping elevate the brand with great content.
Last but not least, my brother Rami Atassi manages our social media and online advertising – he’s also a great guitar player and really connected to the music community.
Truthfully, there are many more, too many to name, but we appreciate everyone who supports us.
