Meet Queen Mars of Queen Mars Music in Hyde Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Queen Mars.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started writing songs when I was around 8. I had always wanted to be a singer and at the time I thought every singer was writing their own music so I wanted to do the same. I started off initially just writing melodies until my grandmother bought me a keyboard when I was 12. Then I started accompanying myself and this creation of music eventually became therapeutic for me throughout my teenage years.

After I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do after and really had no plans for college. I moved to Illinois and was enrolled in a community college where I met my close friend and producer who helped me create a clear vision of what I wanted my music to sound like. So now my process has included writing songs acoustically, producing them, and then trying to reach as many people as possible.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve found that the music industry is extremely male-dominated and so it has been hard navigating through it. Also, there are few people who are actually willing to help you get started. There are millions and millions of artists trying to push their music, so it feels impossible for you to actually make a dent. My biggest challenge was getting over that thought that it’s impossible. Most people don’t, which is why a lot of people quit.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Queen Mars Music – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a singer-songwriter who also assists in production. I think the fact that I am a part of the creation process from beginning to end is what sets me apart. The songs I release, I wrote them alone on piano, then I take them to my producer and sit with him the whole time to give input of how I want it to sound, I sit with the engineer through mixing and mastering. Even down to the visual components of my music like cover photos or photography, I have complete control over how my music is being represented.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the sense of purpose I have in Chicago. Big cities don’t make me feel small, they make me feel larger than life. I feel like I can achieve anything, and that feeling hasn’t wavered.

I dislike how expensive it is, what else can I say?
