Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mayes.
Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in cannabis in 2009 as an investor. Cannabis investment was not only risky but incredibly taboo at that time. I put every dollar I had into a Denver Based Company named Good Meds, and we grew that company from a small home cultivation center into a 90,000 square foot cultivation center in downtown Denver. We expanded into hydrocarbon extractions in a Class 1 Division 1 enclosure and operated two retail dispensaries. From the experience of operating facilities in the most progressive state provided an amazing experience to provide cannabis consulting for clients. We now focus primarily in the cannabis licensing.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many ups and downs. In 2015, the company nearly went under due to an investor pulling all his money out unexpectedly. We had 15 full-time employees at the time, and we had to lay off almost the entire staff. The organization started as a technology firm; we spent $1M trying to bring a seed to sale tracking software to market. We ended up selling the code to pursue consulting full time. Only recently have we started to do amazing again. We had to climb through glass to get to this point. The culmination of our efforts was realized last night when we accepted the Bronze Stevie Award from the American Business Awards in New York City, and we just won another license for a client in Pennsylvania.

Quantum 9 provides cannabis licensing consulting. We work with high net worth individuals to obtain licenses to cultivate, manufacture and dispensary cannabis. We are the most awarded marijuana consulting firm in the space. We have multiple letters of recommendation from elected officials around the world. What sets us apart is our high win rate. We have done 24 total submissions with a 91.6% win rate. The only two we have lost in our career of submissions was the first two.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The city is a fantastic place to live, the energy is electric, and the high pace speed of commerce keeps our firm on the bleeding edge of business. The talent pool in Chicago is second to none, and the colleges are an amazing place to find up and coming talent. We have nearly 50 consultants that work for the company all around the world, but we call Chicago home. Our least favorite thing about the city is the nine months of winter. The sweet wouldn’t be so sweet without the sour; we just have a ton of sour.
