Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Somers.
Paul, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked in graphic design and illustration for a number of years in New York, Chicago, and occasionally in Los Angeles.
Through this practice sometimes, I would create projects which did not quite fit within these marketplaces and I found this work much more interesting to me. I went back to get a Mfa at the University of Chicago, so I could understand the contemporary art world and expand and create work that is part of a bigger contemporary
Art conversation.
Has it been a smooth road?
The art world seems to be a struggle financially. I find it interesting that this field is so crowded. There is not a lot of funding and or collector base in the midwest. This information is not new to me but did not dissuade me from pursuing an art career. At this stage of my life, I feel I am doing exactly what I need to be doing.
I teach college to have a constant paycheck and the time commitment is enormous. The biggest challenge is to carve out time to work in the studio while teaching full time
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Paul Gerard Somers – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am an artist. I make sculptural objects and partake in performances and create videos I am most proud to create interesting and thoughtful work, regularly and collaborating with other artists. I am proud to influence and enlighten students. I am inspired by students as well as my childlike personality, unusual thought processes and life experience set me apart from others.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the people the best.
They are what make this city great. The architecture and history here are wonderful but the people are the reason I’m here.
The corrupt politics and aggressive nature in which this city seems to operate will ultimately be the reason I leave.
Also, Chicago on many fronts is not a very progressive city and this is a shame.
