Meet Pamela Morello

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Morello.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Northern Wisconsin Photographer that specializes in Weddings, Newborns and Seniors-and I love to travel! My wanderlust has had me everywhere from Cozumel to a plantation in Georgia to the West Loop in Chicago. I started ironically as a special education teacher after college, but in 2011, I helped the high school year book staff take a picture of a young man who couldn’t afford to have his senior pictures done professionally…. within a year, I decided to take a leap of faith and leave teaching to do photography full time!

I have three children and a grandson, and I love travel, art and English bulldogs. I have my B. A .in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, and my teaching credential from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. A historic little mining town called Montreal, Wisconsin is what I call home. Population 777!

I studied Adobe Lightroom under Landscape Photographer Tim Cooper and honed my wedding style under Julie Paisley of Nashville, TN. To date, I have been published several times and done 105 Weddings. I love capturing people and being there as if I am the storyteller of YOU. This is my story, beginning my professional photography career began AFTER I turned 40…can’t wait for the next 7 years!

Please tell us about your art.
I am an artist, although I didn’t know it. I loved taking pictures all my life, to help me remember details or little things. I couldn’t buy those, take those home in a bag-they were in my mind. I wanted to tell the stories of my life through my photos. I thought everyone did that. I thought everyone saw what I see. I found out they do not, and people love my art. No on taught me, I just guess I was born this way. I couldn’t be more passionate or happy about it.

I use primarily a Sony A77 DSLR, and a host of about 8 lenses, including Minolta, Tamron, Sigma and more. I use all kinds of filters and stackable macros. I am lucky enough to have been able to have had film cameras and experience, plus digital. I have had LIFE experience, I’ve been married TWICE, divorced, three babies, 1 grandbaby, had scars, surgeries, job changes and seen almost 50 years. While I love nature and live in a very seasonal area with cascading waterfalls and rolling bluffs, I prefer weddings and little babies, seniors with their sports gear, musical instruments or pets. I want to soak it all up. I don’t usually have much of a plan, I just “do”. I trust the process, and I create.

I edit using Adobe Lightroom and on occasion use Photoshop. I have self-taught myself a lot and enjoyed online medium like Creative Live to fill in the blanks. As I grow in experience I am finding I enjoy teaching to others and creating my own presets and actions. My message of inspiration? Look in the mirror-I don’t care who you are, your age, your weight, your IQ-that artist? She/he is in there…. Doesn’t matter what you tell yourself, they are going to come out eventually! Let that kid back out and play!

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
For me it’s become easier, but overall, I think the market saturation for the younger artist is quite intense and difficult, mainly because they haven’t quite figured out their own uniqueness and try all the cookie cutter approaches to becoming known. The coolest thing I see is a rebirth of the fostering of artists through art subsidized lofts, art places and events like art crawls and the creation of the mega site Etsy.

You have to almost get off social media at times, and just try listening to your prospective clients. They have all your answers, that random stranger you meet is no accident; they might just tell you exactly what you need to hear. Be open minded to YOUR experiences, and don’t try to compare yourself to others, compare yourself to who you were yesterday ONLY. Watch yourself grow. “A flower does not compete with another flower, it just BLOOMS.”
