Today we’d like to introduce you to Nguyen Tran.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started drawing (just like almost everyone) when I was very young – my brother was a big inspiration, teaching me how to draw after his art class on Sundays. Then when I was about to finish my high school, I did not really have an idea what college I should attend – drawing was the best thing I could do in class. So, I went to Hochiminh Fine Art University in Saigon, Vietnam, studying print making.
After graduation I went to work for a newspaper, doing layout design. It had nothing to do with what I studied in college, until one day I went to a local bookshop and picked up the American Illustration annual. Then I thought “well, this is what I should be doing”. I quit my job and came to the US in the hope of becoming an illustrator which I had no idea about.
I am looking for a dark, humorous tone in my work and I try to work hard. I love drawing people – I think they are the most challenging yet interesting objects to understand and express – and the best thing is everybody has their own characteristics, their own textures.
In my free time I’d like to take pictures and play table tennis – and help people whenever I can.
Please tell us about your art.
My art varies from clients to objects – anything that has a meaning. I create images digitally, sometimes I scan the drawing then combine them in Photoshop with textures and colors.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen at www.leftstudio.com or on Instagram @ontheleft. If you like my work you can request a print, I’d be happy to make it happen.
