Meet Nan Ruvel of Nan Ruvel Interior Design in Lakeview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nan Ruvel.

Nan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At as young of an age as I can remember, interior design was not only in my house but in my heart and in my blood. Some of my fondest childhood memories include visits to the Merchandise Mart with my interior designer-grandmother, as I would wander wistfully down the halls in admiration of the Fortuny silks and begin to familiarize myself with the detailed nuances of what were to become some of my favorite sources of inspiration, such as the Dunbar classicism. In doing so, this was what was to become the beginning of the forage and aggregation of my own personal sense of aesthetic, style and taste.

The culmination of these awe-inspiring visits with my grandmother led way to the foundation of my own personal business in 1982. Starting off with my first large-scale project, I began to apply the years of meticulously accumulated knowledge into a beautiful modern Gold Coast high-rise filled with the likes of many of the most celebrated modern artists of the time.

Over thirty-five years later and countless projects completed, the symbiotic growth of my endless fervor for knowledge and my application of such knowledge to each and every project continues to remain instrumental in the passion for which I tirelessly devote to every new job and every new client. The affection in which I approach each project with insures time and time again that the same affection will always also be felt by the client whose home it is too.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have truly been blessed with a career that has not only been creatively diverse but a true and genuine joy to wake up to every single morning, year and year again. In a world filled with ugliness and hate, I never once take for granted how lucky I am to have a career that helps breathe beauty and grace back into it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Nan Ruvel Interior Design is a full-scale design firm. Specializing in the adaptation of dream to reality for each and every project, I not only excel in the work I create but the work I put into listening to all of my clients wants and needs. My reputation for being able to listen to a client’s needs and creatively expound upon them has garnered a process that is equal parts inspiring and fun for both the client and myself alike. This ability to listen and put myself in my clients shoes has been fundamental in building my reputation for excellence from start to finish; a reputation that I carefully strive to maintain and employ with any client, any project, however large or however small.

What were you like growing up?
As a small child, while my other friends played with Barbie and rearranged their stuffed animals, I played with furniture and was constantly rearranging the accessories of my parents’ house.

Such an incredibly talented woman! I have had the honor and privilege of working with her and the depth and wealth of her knowledge is incomparable to most anyone I’ve ever met in the design field. There’s a reason Nan rhymes with “can,” because this super-talented woman CAN truly do anything!

I owned a showroom at the Merchandise Mart and Nan was one of the most professional designers I had the pleasure of working with. Not only was she the consummate professional with her clients, but her respect for my employees made her a favorite designer of my company, and the other showrooms in The Merchandise Mart. Her design talent and business acumen make her a perfect choice for an interior designer.
