Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Scumaci.
Mina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a licensed Cosmetologist for almost 30 years and a salon suite owner for 23+ years. Growing frustrations with the current rollers in the market led me to create the first ever 100% boar bristle roller called, The Original ClassiCurl Roller. Over the years I noticed fellow stylist using brushes to “set” hair, they are heavy and uncomfortable for the client and expensive for us stylist to carry many brushes….(it takes about a dozen to fill a head).
Also, brushes come in different diameters which cause another problem….storage space! I thought there had to be a better way, so I contacted an engineer and asked for his help in making a prototype. I was thrilled when I saw the finished product and how well it worked in my hair, I had to have more! That’s when I decided to begin my new business endeavor …..so I can share my innovative rollers with the world! Once I found a manufacturer, I was able to order my first round of inventory. Since then I’ve been working on finding/expanding distribution in both the U.S. and Canada. My goal is to expand the ClassiCurl brand to include complimentary styling agents so women and Cosmetologists can enhance the styles they create using my ClassiCurl rollers.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest challenges was finding a manufacturer and building that business relationship with someone halfway around the world. Also, I hadn’t raised any capital to start; I just received a few small loans from family members, and I had to be very selective on how that money was allocated.

I developed the first ever 100% boar bristle roller called The Original ClassiCurl Roller. They set any style: wavy, curled or straight. Traditional rollers found in the market are short in length, they don’t grip well, the plastic edges snag hair, they cause static, and collect lint. With the combination of the 1.5″ longer barrel and the 100% boar bristles, I reinvented the roller. The ClassiCurl rollers are a healthier alternative for smoothing the hair cuticle while creating volume and shine! These patented rollers provide a stronger grip and longer-lasting blow-dries. The ClassiCurl rollers create an effortless “finished look” with convenience and efficiency. They help women duplicate their salon blow-out at home saving them time and money!
I was thrilled when I found out I was that I was selected to exhibit in coveted Discover Beauty Spotlight section of the show floor, at one of the biggest trade shows in the world, Cosmoprof North America this past July! While there, I was selected as a trendsetter for for Cosmoprof North America 2017. And New Beauty magazine featured my brand as one of 10 most unique discoveries at Cosmoprof Nort America, here is the link:

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think doing what you love and sharing your life with the people you love is a success. I feel being financially secure and being able to live the life of your dreams is also a success. I believe it comes with the achievements you make along the way, big and small. Being successful can help open doors for my three children and give them many opportunities. When the dream of my brand becoming recognized across the U.S. and internationally….that’s when I’ll feel the ultimate success!
