Meet Mel McSherry of Better Than Before in Andersonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel McSherry.

Mel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been an entrepreneur since 2010, my first business was in the fitness industry. I was a certified personal trainer and did in-home training as well as outdoor bootcamps. In 2011 my son was born and I was finding it difficult to travel to my clients home as well as take care of him and I didn’t go into owning my own business so someone else could raise my son and his father, who I was married to at the time, works for Major League Baseball and his schedule meant that he has hardly ever home, let alone in town. So I decided to take a step to the side (I don’t believe in taking steps back), leave my business and work for my father’s company, virtually, and do medical billing.

This was, in no way, my passion, but, it did give me the opportunity to stay home with my son and sometimes we just need to make the best decision we can with the resources we have at the time. In 2013 I was ready to get back into fitness/my own business but wasn’t sure how I was going to make it work until a woman I met on Twitter introduced me to Beachbody and their online health/fitness coaching opportunity and I took it. I loved my experience being a part of Network marketing and I thought this was the game ended opportunity however what ended up happening is the beginning of my journey in business development.

See I grew up in an entrepreneurial household. My father owned several companies before creating his multimillion dollar one at the age of 40, both my grandfathers owned their own businesses, and so did my grandmother. But not a lot of people have these amazing examples in their lives and usually come up again a lot of questions and doubt from their support group when they make the decision to create and build their own business. So suddenly I was spending more time helping women create their vision, their value, and their voice within their business and hardly doing anything with mine and it hit me that this was something that, not only I was really good at, but started to love more that fitness coaching.

So in 2016 I started to make the transition from Mel McSherry “Fitness Coach” to Mel McSherry “Business Development Coach”. I took advantage of an opportunity to mentor with John Maxwell and the got my coaching certification through him, with the focus that I would work predominately with women in network marketing. To ensure that I could do so without any bias I left Beachbody in the middle of 2016 and in 2017 launched Better than Before full time.

2017 was definitely my building period and perfecting my system of process as well as my services, ideal client, etc. This year my business has exploded, I now work with women who have owned their business anywhere from 6 months to 7 years, I now travel internationally and work with a company in Ireland, and speak all over the Chicago area meanwhile going from making less than $2,000/month to $10,ooo/month in the last 6 months.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth road? God no. If anyone has said they have had a smooth road they are full of it, in my opinion.

In my journey I have gone through a divorce, had a heart breaking break up, and even have lost some friendships. But if you are truly developing your authentic self this is bound to happen. I’m not saying you are going to get a divorce or have your heart broken, however things are going to change in your relationships, because you are changing.

I wouldn’t change anything about my journey because everything happens for a reason and I am so proud of who I have become and who I continue to work to be. And the people who are meant to stay with me have stayed and the ones who didn’t served their purpose and I am grateful for the period they were in my life.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Better Than Before – what should we know?
My company is called Better than Before and I am an International Business Development Coach and Speaker. I predominantly work with women in business and women business owners who are overwhelmed and exhausted by what they think they need to do in order to be successful.

I help they slash their stress by showing them how to prioritize their profits, time and themselves effectively. This not only doubles their income but also their free time to enjoy it which gives them the money, the business, and the life they want, fast.

I am proud of how many people I have helped in the last year and a half, whether that is through my coaching, speaking, or social media posts. I am passionate about helping people be better than before.

What sets me apart? I am supportive, loving, but very black and white. One of my favorite quotes from a former client is “If anyone else would have told me what you just did I would punch them in the face, but yet when you say it, it makes total sense and I want to do it!” I get you to dig deeper because I don’t have the answers, you do, I am here to help you find it and put it into action.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My coaches are the biggest reason why I am where I am today. My first coach, Melanie Burnsed, helped me prioritize what I wanted to first create, kept me accountable, as well as pushed me to be more. She was definitely the one who helped me conquer my fear of success and my procrastination problem. My second, and current coach, Moira Ni Ghallachoir has taken what Melanie helped me create and has elevated it to the next level. Because of her I am now known as not only a speaker but an international speaker. She constantly inspires me and pushes me.

Of course my family and friends have played major parts in keeping me grounded yet passionate as well as my clients. My clients teach me every single day and they are the main business reason why I go to bed happy, successful and fulfilled and wake up every single day excited, passionate, and ready for more!
