Meet Marian Gorzelany of John’s Upholstery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marian Gorzelany.

Marian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My brother John and I immigrated to Chicago from Europe in the late 1970’s and worked for a reupholstery firm in Skokie, IL. After gaining on the job experience and feeling more confident in our finances, we decided to open our own business in 1991. We spent the first few years focused on advertising and building relationships with clients. Over the years, we developed a loyal client base that spread news of our excellent quality and customer service through word of mouth.

Has it been a smooth road?
From a personal standpoint, starting a business in a country that my brother and I were still new to was not easy, especially with both of us having young children. Opening John’s Upholstery required long hours away from family, but our families’ ongoing support contributed to our success. From a business perspective, John’s Upholstery experienced the economic fluctuations, specifically downturn, as much as any other small, family-owned business. Our supportive families and clients played a strong role in our ability to keep business strong and we have rebounded and been growing ever since!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
For over 25 years, John’s Upholstery has taken customers’ ideas and dreams and made them into reality. John’s Upholstery is a custom upholstery shop, which means that we are there to assist every step of the way. We are invested in the process and pride ourselves on fully understanding your aspirations for your piece.

Our services include, but are not limited to, custom upholstery on any furniture piece, furniture repair (re-gluing, touch-ups, polishing), replacing broken or torn cane, custom sewing (throw pillows, dust ruffles, cornices) and collaborating with interior designers for a top to bottom custom look.

As furniture is an essential part of your home, reupholstery of furniture is an investment our customers do not regret. A custom feel in the home is what is important to our customers and, in turn, us. We understand that each furniture piece is unique and special to the customer. Therefore, we strive to provide a product that our customers will enjoy for many years to come.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is a diverse city and full of opportunities. I would recommend this city as a great place to start a small business. More specifically, the Edgebrook community is surrounded by and very supportive of the family-owned businesses in the area.
