Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry in Burberry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Larry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Larry and Burberry persona was born on the streets of Florence, Italy. I was there on vacation with my wife and our best couple friend. Throughout our trip, my wife and friend were constantly mentioning things their favorite fashion bloggers did in each location and stores we had to check out because Songs of Style or Damsel in Dior had recently been there. After a few sangria’s, I jokingly said, “I wish there were men bloggers that would tell us what to do and see. Damsel in Dior seems great, but where’s Larry in Burberry?”
From there, I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the world. I started writing recaps of all the fashion weeks, mixing education with practical applications of each season’s trends. People seemed to like it, so I started an Instagram for Larry to provide style inspiration, tips and hopefully some laughter.
Overall, we all have to wear clothes, so let’s wear them well and feel good about it. It’s been fun.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge is getting skeptical guys to care.
Fashion isn’t something everyone wants to think about or discuss, and many men aren’t ready to change the way they’ve dressed forever.
If a girlfriend sends a Larry in Burberry article to her boyfriend on G Chat, I want him to respond with “No. Not my style. Too busy for this”, and then read it and think, “Hmmmm.” If I talk about Louis Vuitton camouflage on a Paris runway, I want my dad to say it was interesting when he comes back from his annual Thanksgiving hunting trip. Those are big wins for me.
I’ve tried not to tell people what to do and talk about some of the low points of my fashion journey. I’ve worn a bedazzled Ed Hardy tiger shirt in public. I’ve worn Gap capri pants to the first day of 8th grade. We all start somewhere, but its fun to look good. I just try to be helpful.
Larry in Burberry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I like to describe Larry in Burberry as informatively tongue-in-chic.
It’s a fashion blog and Instagram that exists to provide outfit inspiration, how-tos, trend highlights, what to wear to a [insert occasion] ideas, sales to shop and fun videos – all presented in a way that’s helpful and entertaining. (I recently showed how well brown and black go together by dressing like my mini-bernedoodle for National Dog Day.)
Larry knows what #RevolveAroundtheWorld is, but sometimes applies it to things like “How to Wear JNCOs in the Wisconsin Dells” (while talking about the wide-leg denim trend celebs and fashionistas are still loving right now).
My grandpa was a farmer who wore Christian Dior belts. That’s always stuck with me. I loved that and try to bring some of that juxtaposition and je ne sais quoi to Larry.
Other examples of recent content include what to wear to a rehearsal dinner, how to wear white pants, animals on shirts power rankings and the t-shirt every man needs.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My friend Brock had me pick out a pocket square for him for a charity event. Getting a guy named Brock to think about upgrading his fashion and entrusting a male fashion blogger to do it was big.
John Varvatos also told me once he liked how I wore a jacket he designed. That was cool.
