Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakshmi Lakshmanan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my legal career working at a non-profit in Chicago’s north side serving the South Asian community. Soon after, I began the Law Offices of Lakshmi Lakshmanan, Ltd. and focused my practice on Immigration and Nationality Law. I have had my own practice for nearly 10 years now.
I serve clients from all over the world. The growth of my practice is largely attributed to word of mouth (my clients referring me to their friends and family). As an immigration attorney, I am fully aware that each of my client’s cases is integral to their lives. I do my best to develop a trusting relationship with each client and to be responsive to their needs.
Has it been a smooth road?
Opening your own firm is not an easy decision and there will most certainly be bumps along the way. The struggles change with time. At first, the struggle was the growth of the business, then practice management, work/life balance, continued professional development, etc.
I have personally found that having mentors and colleagues that can serve as a sounding board is critical to getting through the bumps. When you are a solo practitioner, it is important to have others around you who can help debate a case, talk through difficult client situations, provide ideas or solutions for issues and celebrate your successes!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an attorney with my own solo practice.
My practice is specifically focused on immigration and nationality law. I handle a variety of family and employment-based cases and also assist clients with a variety of non-immigrant visas.
I serve clients from all over the world given my practice is global in nature. My firm focuses on providing clients with individual attention. I find it is important to develop a strong relationship with clients so that trust is established and we can work effectively to solve issues.
I always identify to my clients that we need to partner together to get the best outcomes. As such, it is important that the lines of communication are open and honest.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is a diverse city with many immigrants and global companies, as such it lends itself to be a good place to practice immigration law.
